In 2 Samuel Chapter 23 there is a listing of David’s Mighty Warriors.
One of them was a man named SHAMMAH (vv.11-12).
We learn in verse 11 that the Philistines had banded together to attack the Israelites in a field of lentils.
The Philistines were the well-known enemy of the Israelites.
They wanted to take over this field of lentils.
All the Israelite troops fled. They were no doubt intimated and fearful of the Philistines.
Take a close look at verse 11.
In contrast to all the Israelites who fled we read the words “But Shammah …”
He stood out from all the other mighty warriors. He responded differently.
The first thing that he did was take his stand in the middle of the field.
All the other Israelite warriors took off … but Shammah stood in the middle of the field.
Lentil fields would have been on flat land. The lentils would grow up to your knees and you would easily get caught in them.
Yet Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He wasn’t going to give the enemy this field.
He could have stood on the edge of the field … ready to run for his life … but instead he stood in the middle of it.
The second thing he did was he defended it.
Lastly, he struck the Philistines down.
Because Shammah did these three things we read “and the Lord brought about a great victory”
One of the great names of God is “Jehovah-Shammah" which means “The Lord is there”
I would challenge each of us men to invite God to be, “there” in every area of our lives. In our marriage, our family, our work, etc.
Whatever is your “lentil field” invite God to be present there.
And then take your stand against the enemy who wants to bring harm to these areas of your life.
Take your stand and authority in Christ. Invite Him to be THERE.
Defend it and watch God bring the VICTORY.
Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. 12 But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory. - 2 Samuel 23:11-12 (NIV)
